Over the past few years, Europe has embarked on ambitious goals, starting with the European Green Deal, which aims to reduce EU greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. Nowadays, circular biobased economy is recognized as a cornerstone of Europe’s low carbon strategy, as it promises to significantly reduce GHG emissions, lessen dependence on fossil resources, and drive economic growth for the coming decades.

PROMOFER Project, from biorefineries to biobased products.

European biorefineries are set to play a key role in the circular economy by converting biomass into biobased products. These biorefineries will not only revitalize rural areas but also provide valuable products for sectors like agriculture, packaging, and textiles. The PROMOFER Project, guided by Circular Biobased Europe Joint Undertaking, is outlining a robust and flexible logistical system for biomass collection, transport, and storage in order to enhance the production efficiency of two biobased compounds: PHBV, a flexible and biodegradable polymer, and 2,3-BDO, a versatile chemical.

VEGEA introduces biobased 2,3-BDO to technical textiles.

Having a multi-actor approach, PROMOFER Project will include all the relevant actors in the biobased system, from the fermentation and biotechnology developers to the industrial actors. Due to the widespread recognition of its expertise on eco-sustainable products and renewable resources, VEGEA has been invited to take part in this ambitious project. By developing new tailored formulations, VEGEA will find a market position in technical textiles for biobased 2,3-BDO as a reagent for the synthesis of innovative polyurethanes, thereby contributing to the advancement of circular economy.
